Proofreading and Editing Academic Texts in German

Having your term paper or dissertation corrected for language errors will increase your chances of good grades and getting published. Your teachers and professor can focus on the quality of your research instead of correcting those pesky mistakes many students make while focusing on the content of their term papers and theses.

Since I am a native German speaker with several years of academic teaching and proofreading experience, I find and correct every mistake in your paper. I focus on correcting errors in spelling, grammar, syntax and punctuation.

For best results, I recommend editing services. While editing includes all steps involved in proofreading, I will also correct inadequately used idioms and phrases and draw your attention to contradictory or ambiguous formulations. And as a final step, I will focus on the flow of reading, correct phrasing, a reasonable sentence length, word repetitions as well as unclear references in your text and footnotes.

As a PhD-level professional, I am qualified to proofread and edit the following documents:

  • Dissertations (Bachelor, Master and PhD theses)
  • Journal articles
  • Academic books and other non-fiction
  • Book synopses and descriptions
  • Research proposals
  • Essays and presentations
  • Job applications
  • Author biographies and publication lists
  • Brochures, posters and flyers
  • Works of fiction.

Service Levels

Different texts have different requirements. To assist you in achieving the best result possible, the work I do depends on the quality of your German writing. This is why I offer three service levels.

Proofreading (Final Check)

If your writing is almost ready but you need another pair of eyes to spot spelling, punctuation and grammar mistakes, this service level is for you. I’ll correct all German language errors.

Proofreading & Stylistic Editing

Non-native German speakers will benefit from text editing as this service improves style, clarity and sentence structure. To enhance the flow of your writing, paragraphs may be restructured.

Heavy Text Editing (Manual Rewrite)

If heavy text-editing is required, I’ll rewrite every sentence manually, making sure that your ideas and arguments are presented in a cohesive way. However, this is not a ghost-writing service.

Pricing

Proofreading (final check): from £5 per 1,000 characters including spaces

Proofreading & stylistic editing: from £10 per 1,000 characters including spaces

Heavy text editing (manual rewrite): from £12 per 1,000 characters including spaces

The minimum charge is £20, however small the character count may be. Please be aware that I do not proofread or edit pdfs, scans and handwritten documents.

Pricing is indicative and subject to change. As I operate below the VAT threshold I don’t charge VAT.

How I work

Please send me your work either as a Google doc or as a Microsoft Word email attachment and include your university’s style guide. As soon as you have sent me your paper, I will evaluate the quality of your writing, do a character count and multiply this by the rate that applies to you. I will then send you a quote, so even if I have to spend a lot of time on correcting and editing your paper, you can be sure that the price will not go up – a clear advantage over hourly paid proofreaders and editors. In my quote, I will also specify how long proofreading or editing your German text will take.

My work is 100 percent transparent because I use the ‘track changes’ function of MS Word and the editing mode in Google docs. Corrections and comments are shown in the right-hand margin next to your text or in the text itself, which makes it easy for you to accept or ignore the changes I suggest.

I am happy to answer any questions about my corrections and suggestions. You can also book a tutoring session with me if you wish to improve your German language skills in general or learn how to avoid specific, recurrent mistakes in your paper.

Please make sure that there is plenty of time before the submission deadline so we can discuss anything that comes up during or after the proofreading process.
